Scripture - Luke 4:18 (NKJV)
The anointing of Jesus Christ was given to bring people out of every form of captivity and into God’s purpose, freedom, restoration, and victory.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me. To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives. And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed’’
The anointing is God’s divine empowerment to break yokes, destroy oppression, and establish His will in our lives.
The purpose of Jesus’ anointing
The anointing is designed for good works: Jesus was anointed to reveal the goodness of God and demonstrate His power through acts of mercy, healing, and transformation - Acts 10:38 (NKJV)
“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good…” The evidence of the anointing is not noise but transformed lives.
It is important to note that anointing empowers believers to become instruments of God’s goodness.
The anointing is designed for recovery and restoration of health - Matthew 8:16 (NKJV). “He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick.” The ministry of Jesus demonstrates that healing is part of God’s redemptive plan.
What the anointing restores:
- Physical health
- Emotional health
- Mental well-being
- Spiritual vitality
The anointing is designed for liberation from oppression - 1 John 3:8 (NKJV) “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”
Micah 2:13 (NKJV) “The one who breaks open will come up before them…”Jesus came as the Breaker to destroy every prison door and remove every limitation. Many people are fighting physical battles that have spiritual roots.
The spiritual controls the physical - It is important to know not only that you are fighting, but also what you are fighting. Behind every visible captivity is an invisible force.
What happens in the spiritual realm often manifests in the physical realm. In Exodus 1:13-14 (NKJV), the Israelites experienced bitter bondage under Pharaoh.
Expertise alone does not guarantee success - In Luke 5:5 (GNT), Peter had, experience, skill, knowledge and equipment Yet he failed until Jesus spoke.
Lesson: Success in life is not determined merely by education, connections, strength, or appearance. God wants us to understand that true success comes through His favor and direction.
Victory is not by human power but by divine enablement - 1 Samuel 2:9 (MSG) “No one makes it in this life by sheer muscle!”
Jesus came to address the root cause of captivity
There is a reason behind every prolonged struggle. In Luke 8:2 (NKJV), Jesus delivered people from evil spirits and bondage. God does not merely treat symptoms; He deals with roots.
TYPES OF CAPTIVITY
- Ancestral Captivity - This refers to inherited patterns, cycles, and limitations that seem to run through family lines.
Examples:
- Persistent poverty
- Repeated failure
- Marital instability
- Chronic sicknesses
- Addictions and destructive behaviors
The good news is that the cross has already provided freedom from every inherited curse. In Galatians 3:13-14 (NKJV) “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law…”
Not everyone in your family is permitted to remain under the same bondage. You can be the generation that breaks the cycle.
Barabbas in John 18:40 (NKJV). Barabbas was released because Jesus took his place. This is a picture of redemption. Jesus took our curse, bondage, punishment and we received our freedom.
Luke 13:11-16 (NKJV) –A woman was bound by a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years. Jesus declared: “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” Therefore, long-standing captivity can be broken in one encounter with Jesus.
What does it take for the anointing to work?
The anointing works with the Word - Many seek the oil but neglect the Word. Yet Jesus Himself is the Word. In John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word…” John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh…”
Key principle: Without the Word, the anointing cannot function properly. The power is not in the oil itself. The power is in: The Word spoken, the faith exercised and the Christ revealed
The bible is our prayer manual - Prayer becomes effective when it is based on God’s Word. 1 John 5:14 (NKJV) “If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”
Many prayers fail or aren’t answered because they are based on emotions rather than Scripture. Effective prayer includes finding the promise, praying, believing and receiving the promise.
The oil itself has no power apart from God’s Word. It is the Word prayed into the oil that activates faith.
It is not about shouting louder, adding more emotional displays and endless “fire, fire, fire”
It is about understanding God’s Word, believing God’s Word and acting on God’s Word - Acts 20:32 (NKJV) “And now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”
What the Word does:
- Builds you up
- Establishes your inheritance
- Strengthens faith
- Activates the anointing
- Produces lasting liberty
The anointing of Jesus is God’s provision for:
- Good works
- Healing and restoration
- Deliverance from oppression
- Freedom from ancestral captivity
- Breaking spiritual limitations
- Walking in divine success
Declaration - “Through the finished work of Christ, every yoke of captivity over my life is broken. I am redeemed from every curse, liberated from every oppression, restored in every area, and empowered to fulfill God’s purpose for my life in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.”
